'Mamma Mia' Sequel In The Works

Fans are still several months away from the release of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the sequel to the beloved musical comedy that first hit theaters ten years ago in 2008, but content from the new movie has begun trickling out. Despite the film not premiering until July 20, there are already a few >Mamma Mia 2 photos and songs you can check out right now, which should go a long way toward building the hype for this decade-in-the-making new installment.

The new movie functions as both a sequel and prequel to the original film, as it sees Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) pregnant with her first child. As she is worried about how she'll be as a mother, she hears the story of how her mother Donna (Meryl Streep) handled her own pregnancy when she was young and underprepared. Lily James portrays young Donna in the portion of the film that takes place in the past, while several other characters from the original — such as Rosie, Tanya, Bill, Harry, and Sam — also have younger versions of themselves represented in the movie. New to the cast in the present day is Cher, who portrays Donna's mother and Sophie's grandmother, Ruby. She can be seen, alongside the rest of the enormous cast in the film's poster, seen below.

In the poster, you can see Cher all the way on the left. Next to her is Christine Baranski, reprising her role as Tanya, and to her immediate left is Julie Waters, returning as Rosie. Seated in from of Waters is Dominic Cooper, who is once again portraying Sky, while to Waters left is the trio of Colin Firth (Harry), Stellan Skarsgård (Bill), and Pierce Brosnan (Sam). Next to Brosnan is of course Meryl Streep (Donna), while Amanda Seyfried (Sophie) stands in the center. On Seyfried's left, we have the actors portraying the younger versions of the characters. They are, from left to right, Lily James (young Donna), Jeremy Irvine (young Sam), Josh Dylan (young Bill), Hugh Skinner (young Harry), Jessica Keenan Wynn (young Tanya), and Alexa Davies (young Rosie). Finally, bookending the enormous poster is fellow newcomer Andy Garcia, who is portraying a character named Fernando.

The film has released a handful of photos showing off the cast, both old and new, like the below shot of James, Wynn, and Davies performing as the young incarnation of the Dynamos.

Then there's Donna in the present day, still doing what she does best and rocking the mic.

There's also a shot of Sophie's three "dads" in the present day, looking just as charming as they did ten years ago.

And of course, Sophie gets a chance to catch up with her mother's old bandmates, as well.

As far as the film's songs are concerned, there are a number that are have been previewed in the movie's three trailers. The film's original trailer features the tracks "I Have a Dream," "Dancing Queen," and of course "Mamma Mia," performed by James.

This was followed up with a television spot that premiered during the Grammy Awards, which focused more on Cher's role in the film — her first on screen movie appearance since 2010. The ad features Cher performing "Fernando," which most likely has something to do with Garcia's character. This trailer also features the song "Waterloo."

Finally, in the film's newest trailer, one more new song is revealed in "Angeleyes," while even more of James' rendition of "Mamma Mia" is showcased.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again may not hit theaters until this summer, but if the film's early marketing is any indication, fans can expect lots of fresh content from the studio to tide them over until then.
