Anderlecht Sporting Director Confirms Youri Tielemans Set To Depart

Liverpool are reportedly set to enter the race to sign Anderlecht midfielder Youri Tielemans alongside Monaco and Tottenham Hotspur

According to L'Equipe (h/t Joe Rimmer of the Liverpool Echo), the Reds have joined the French side in the hunt for the Belgian, but Monaco are "overwhelming favourites" to sign him.

Meanwhile, Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel told Bild (h/t Rimmer) that reported Liverpool target Max Meyer will not yet be given a new deal at the club: "At the moment it does not make any sense to think about it. Max has to convince the coach that he belongs in the starting 11."

Per HLN's Kristof Terreur, there are a number of other teams also linked with Tielemans, for whom game time will be an important factor in deciding where to move this summer:

No English clubs are mentioned among the clubs that are seriously interested. Lyon and Dortmund are also in touch.

Tielemans is mainly looking for playing time (and preferably Champions League football), so he can develop as a player.

The Reds are yet to find a real replacement for Steven Gerrard in midfield, and while Tielemans isn't exactly in the same mould as the Liverpool legend, he has the potential to reach similar heights.

A regular in the Anderlecht side since he was 16, Tielemans has already made 175 senior appearances for them in central midfield and is enjoying his best season yet.

As the UEFA Europa League noted, the youngster has been prolific this year:

He's also produced 11 assists, which further demonstrates the match-winning contributions he's been making on a regular basis and the vision and technical ability he brings to the centre of the park.

Here's a look at him in action:

It's clear he's ready to make the step up from Belgian football to one of Europe's top leagues, but it's equally evident Liverpool will face tremendous competition for his signature.

If the Reds can bolster their chances by finishing in the top four, they can still hold realistic aspirations of signing him.

As for Meyer, the playmaker has just one year left on his deal with Schalke.

The 21-year-old, who ostensibly plays as a No. 10 or in a supporting role, has accrued two goals and five assists in all competitions this season, including one against Wolfsburg at the weekend, per Schalke:

Meyer is a creative talent, with Squawka showing he has created 25 chances in the Bundesliga this season and a further 13 in seven Europa League outings.

However, Heidel's comments are telling—there's a reason the club haven't been scrambling to get his future secured despite the little time remaining on his deal.

Meyer is a promising player and he could still be a useful signing if brought in cheaply, but he's yet to set the world alight.
