In recent years BMW have held a monopoly on the Moto GP safety car. We’ve see a BMW X6 M, a BMW M6 Gran Coupe and a BMW M4 among others. This year the Moto GP will get a 2016 BMW M2!
The organiser of Moto GP, Dorna Sports and BMW M Division have signed an extended cooperation agreement up to and including 2020. The new agreement will ensure the continuation of BMW M cars as Safety Cars. In reality, BMW M Division actually provide a number of cars and bikes to the organisers including the BMW S 1000 RR Safety Bikes.
The BMW M2 Moto GP Safety Car makes its debut this season. It receives a series of modifications from the factory to ensure its effectiveness as the course Safety Car. As well as the mandatory lights and livery, the M2 Moto GP Safety Car gets BMW M Performance Parts, roll cage from the BMW M4 GTS, anchors for the six-point harness and bracket for the fire extinguisher. It also gets a coiler suspension kit, carbon ceramic brakes and a racing bonnet.BMW M2 Moto GP Safety Car 1 of 18
The BMW S 1000 RR Safety Bikes complete timing laps prior to the race taking part, which are used to check whether the timing and data systems are working correctly. The Safety Bikes are followed by a slow lap with the Safety Cars, Medical Cars and the Safety Officer Car, during which each individual steward posts is checked.
Alongside the new 2016 BMW M2 Moto GP Safety Car, BMW will also provide a BMW M4 Coupé with water injection and the BMW M3; both will perform Safety Car Roles. BMW will also provide a BMW X5 M and the BMW M550d xDrive Touring for the Medical Cars and a BMW M5 for the Safety Officer Car. Two BMW S 1000 RRs will work as Safety Bikes. All receive upgrades similar to those on the 2016 BMW M2 Moto GP Safety Car.
