Martinez signing, they have made room for him on the 40-man roster. Boston traded outfielder Bryce Brentz to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations. Brentz had been the favorite to earn a fourth outfielder spot on the roster, but with news of the Martinez deal coming on Monday, Brentz appeared to be the odd man out. The 29-year-old Brentz, who was out of options, hit .271 with an .863 OPS and and an International League leading 31 homers last season in Pawtucket. Martinez will likely get most of his at-bats at designated hitter, but has played a majority of his career in the outfield. Even with that in mind, Brock Holt may serve as the primary backup outfielder for the club with Martinez as another option. Either way, the club decided to cut ties with Brentz. -- Follow MassLive.com Red Sox beat reporter >@jcmccaffrey on Twitter. She can be reached by email at >email@example.com.
