Sebastian Vettel cruised to victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, quite literally.
Vettel, who earned the pole position at Sunday's race, never relinquished his lead. He fended off the likes of Valterri Bottas and Max Verstappen, who placed second and third respectively, to claim his 50th career Formula One win. The victory marks the first time since 2013 where Vettel became champion at the Montreal track.
"We never had a moment in the race where he had to be scared," Vettel told reporters following the win. "The car was doing what I wanted so . . . perfect day I guess."
A perfect day indeed for Vettel, who became fourth driver in history to reach the 50 wins plateau. He nearly achieved the feat at last month's Monaco Grand Prix but narrowly missed standing atop of the podium. Vettel needed to wait a little longer to celebrate the accomplishment that puts him in the same category as Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost and current foe Lewis Hamilton.
The outcome was rewarding enough for Vettel. But he also overtakes Hamilton for first in the Formula One Drivers' standings. Entering Sunday, Vettel compiled 96 points to Hamilton's 110. Vettel was able to sway enough points in his favor to end the race week with a one-point lead over Hamilton, who finished fifth in the race.
"We have to keep applying the pressure," Hamilton said according to Sky Sports. "We didn't this weekend, but I'm really going to make sure I come back stronger in the next race.
The F1 schedule continues in two weeks at the French Grand Prix, which is set to take place on June 24.
