A 4-year-old boy was hit by a pickup truck and seriously injured on Sunday after the child rode a wave on a Florida beach too close to a traffic lane, officials said.

The accident happened around 3 p.m. on Ormond Beach, after authorities closed the area to vehicles because high tide was covering the traffic lane.

Volusia County beach safety spokeswoman Tammy Marris said the 19-year-old driver saw the child in the water, but continued driving after he lost sight of the boy. The child got off his body board and ran into the right front bumper.

The truck then ran over the child's mid-section, according to Marris.

“He was screaming a little bit and wiggling around,” eyewitness Mac Rowland told FOX 35 Orlando. “They were telling him just to stay still and wait till the lifeguards got there.”

The boy was transported to a hospital and is in serious condition, but is expected to survive his injuries.

Marris told FOX 35 the teenage driver won't face any charges.
