Crews from Indianapolis Fire Department were called to the 100 block of East St. Clair Street, close to the central branch of the Indianapolis Public Library just off Meridian Street, around 4:25 p.m. on a report of a person stabbed.
Emergency responders initially believed there were six patients and the incident was updated to a mass casualty, but it was later determined that four people had been injured, IFD Battalion Chief Rita Reith said in a release.
Three of the men, including the person of interest, were transported Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital -- one in critical condition, one in serious condition and one in slight condition. The fourth man was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition.
Officials later arrested 57-year-old Gary Madison in connection to the stabbing. He faces three felony counts of battery by means of a deadly weapon.
The incident appeared to be isolated, according to Officer Jim Gillespie with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Detectives were on the scene speaking to people on Saturday afternoon.
The stabbing follows a
fatal shooting around 1:30 p.m. on the city's north side. Just before 7 p.m. Saturday,
a man was shot and killed on the city's near south side.
All of the incidents remain under investigation.
