East Rochester

ROCHESTER — A 7-year old boy was transported to the hospital Wednesday evening after being struck by a car, according to police.

At approximately 8:18 p.m., the Rochester police, fire and Frisbie EMS personnel responded to the area of 24 Mill St. in East Rochester for a report of a male juvenile who had been hit by a car.

The boy was riding a BMX-style bicycle on the sidewalk on the north side of the street as Tricia Smith, 32, of Rochester, was traveling westbound on Mill St., according to police. Initially hidden behind two parked vehicles, the boy entered the roadway from in front of the parked vehicles and into Smith’s path of travel. Police said she was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision.

The 1998 Mercury Sable she was operating sustained very minor damage. The juvenile’s bicycle sustained a bent rim but no other major damage, said police.

The boy was transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital with a suspected wrist fracture and minor abrasions. He was not wearing a helmet at the time.

Police described the collision as “low-speed” and said no charges will be filed due to the facts of the case. Police added that there was no indication of drugs or alcohol being involved in this collision and Smith cooperated completely with the investigation.

The Rochester Police Department would like to remind parents and caregivers that children under the age of 16 years are required to wear a bicycle helmet when riding a bike on public property.
