Formula 1 2017: Starting Grid, Lineup For British Grand Prix At Silverstone

Lewis Hamilton has pole for the British Grand Prix, and he’ll need it to keep up in the Drivers Championship. As far as points go, he’s trailing Sebastian Vettel by a total of 20, and a race win is worth 25 points.

Ferrari’s Vettel qualified in third for Sunday’s race, behind teammate Kimi Raikkonen and the Mercedes of Hamilton. Valtterri Bottas, Hamilton’s partner, had a shot at a top spot but incurred a five-place grid penalty due to a premature gearbox change.

Sunday’s race is set to begin at 8 a.m. ET and will be broadcast in the United States by CNBC. As usual, an online stream of the race will be available as a simulcast of the television coverage beginning at the same time via NBC Sports and the NBC Sports App.

Hamilton was briefly under investigation by the stewards for an incident with Romain Grosjean of Haas, but he was cleared of wrongdoing and his spot was solidified.

Another five-place grid penalty went to Daniel Ricciardo due to changes made to the car after a turbo failed in the first qualifying session. He will be starting second to last on the grid, ahead of only Fernando Alonso of McLaren, who has a huge grid place penalty for multiple car changes.

“Obviously tomorrow is another day, I’m just disappointed not to have shown more of what we could do in qualifying,” Ricciardo said. “But yeah, tomorrow is where the points are. We have some work ahead of us to get back into them, but until we can it is what it is.”

Bottas is third in the championship standings, less than 20 points behind Hamilton, and nearly 40 points clear of Ricciardo. Bottas is still most certainly in the running for the Drivers Championship, but his position starting from ninth on the grid is going to hurt his chances.

Still, the big story is on Hamilton and Vettel. Raikkonen may split the two, but Vettel has found his way past his teammate in similar situations in the past, and he’ll likely scrap with Hamilton early and often.

Vettel got in trouble a couple races ago when he intentionally bumped cars with Hamilton when he felt like the British driver was brake checking him under a safety car.

Below is the full starting grid and all you need to know to watch the action on Sunday.
