Formula 1 Driver Fernando Alonso Will Test For Indianapolis 500 On May 3

Fernando Alonso completed his first World Endurance Championship test Sunday, all but confirming that he will be competing in the 2018 Le Mans 24 Hours.

Alonso completed an initial 37-lap run in the No. 8 Toyota Gazoo Racing LMP1 following Saturday’s WEC Six Hours of Bahrain -- a race that was won by Sébastien Buemi in that very car -- and then successfully completed the rookie test later in the day.

After a steady first session, Alonso picked up the pace during his second outing but would not let on as to whether he would be taking his interest any further.

"One day it would be nice [to race in endurance]," said Alonso. "I don’t know when, but endurance for sure is one of the goals for me in the future after F1."

"I think a test in an LMP1 is always a nice thing for any racing driver; these cars are amazing to drive and are very consistent in the stints.”

Toyota confirmed that Alonso had not been pushing for a quick time, nor had he been sent out on a low fuel run at any point.

His participation in the test means that should Alonso decide that he wants to, he will now be able to race at Le Mans, something he has long desired to do. Along with the Monaco Grand Prix and Indianapolis 500, Le Mans completes the triple crown of motorsport, and only Graham Hill has tasted victory in all three events.

The grandson of two-time Formula 1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi, Pietro Fittipaldi -- fresh from taking the Formula V8 3.5 championship crown -- was the fastest rookie of the day. Piloting the No. 1 Porsche, Fittipaldi finished inside the top nine with a 1:42.275.
