With the Republican convention fast approaching and a fail-safe majority of delegates in no candidate’s grip, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and John Kasich are ramping up efforts to win over the crucial remaining delegates up for grabs – and they’ll stop at almost nothing to get them.
In Staten Island on Sunday night, billionaire businessman and party front-runner Trump denounced the “corrupt” delegate system – but also made it clear that the perks he has to offer delegates are far better than those of any other candidate.
“Nobody has better toys than I do,” he told reporters, according to ABC News. “I can put [delegates] on the best planes and bring them to the best resorts anywhere in the world.”
Trump added, however, that he has no plans to use his “toys” to woo delegates. “You’re basically buying these people. You’re basically saying, ‘Delegate, listen, we’re going to send you to Mar-a-Lago on a Boeing 757, you’re going to use the spa, you’re going to do this, you’re going to do that, we want your vote.’ That’s a corrupt system.”
Trump has accused rival Cruz of manipulating that system by luring delegates with unspecified “goodies” and “crooked shenanigans.”
“They’re trying to subvert the movement,” Trump told thousands of voters at a rally in Rochester, New York, last week. “They can’t do it with bodies, so they’re trying to subvert the movement with crooked shenanigans.”
But Cruz’s aides insist they are following the party’s rules to win over the delegates.
“It’s no surprise that Trump’s team will lash out with falsehoods to distract from their failure, as they have the entire time,” said Cruz spokeswoman Alice Stewart. “We have earned our success by working hard to build a superior organization and are working within the process and rules that have been established.”
Kasich, too, is doing whatever it takes to woo delegates. The >The Argus Leader reports that the Ohio governor’s campaign offered to “take care” of a South Dakota delegate when she attends the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this summer.
Char Cornelius tells the paper that the offers likely won’t sway her opinion – with one exception. “If I get a lunch with LeBron James,” she says, “that might be a turning point.”
