A handful of Florida Panthers players could participate in next month’s IIHF World Championship, but only one is confirmed — so far.
Defenseman Aaron Ekblad said he will play for Team Canada in the tournament running from May 4-20 in Denmark. Ekblad, 22, just completed perhaps his best season in the NHL, scoring a career-high 16 goals while playing all 82 games on the top defensive pairing and averaging a career-high 23:23 of ice time.
Panthers coach Bob Boughner will serve as an assistant coach for Team Canada during the tournament, with Carolina’s Bill Peters as the head coach and St. Louis’ Mike Yeo as the associate coach. Boughner completed his first season as a NHL coach with a 44-30-8 record.
“It’s special to be able to work for your country and put that logo,” Boughner said. “It’s going to be a great opportunity to learn more about other players and get to work with other players and other coaches. You’re always trying to continue to get better and press yourself to be better. I think that’s going to allow me the opportunity to do that.”
