The NFL draft is just a week away, and both of the latest mock drafts at
WalterFootball.com include just a pair of former Tennessee players in a six-round projection.
Both projections from analysts
Charlie Campbell and
Both Kelly and Gaulden elected to bypass their senior seasons with the Vols to make an early jump into the NFL draft and widely have been projected as a mid-round picks, with Gaulden even getting some third-round projections.
They were perhaps the best players on each side of the ball in an otherwise forgettable season for Tennessee in 2017.
Campbell's projection, released on Monday, has Kelly going in the middle of the fourth round to the Kansas City Chiefs with the 124th overall pick and Gaulden as an early sixth-round pick (184th overall) to the San Francisco 49ers.
Here is Campbell's explanation for projecting Kelly to the Chiefs in the fourth round:
The Chiefs grab a backup for Kareem Hunt. Sources say Kansas City really likes Kelly.
Kelly (5-10, 216) is a tough runner, but he has a limited skill set for the NFL. The junior averaged 4.1 yards per carry in 2017 for 778 yards with nine touchdowns. He also had 37 receptions for 299 yards. Kelly put together a strong start to the 2017 season before Tennessee struggled in the final two months of the year. In the NFL, Kelly could be a quality backup and rotational back, but he lacks the skill set to be a three-down starter.
Campbell has the 49ers selecting Gaulden
Cherepinsky flipped the rounds for the two former Vols.
His projection has Gaulden going in the middle of the fourth round (117th overall) to the Detroit Lions, where he would be reunited with former Tennessee teammate Jalen Reeves-Maybin, the linebacker who was a fourth-round pick and contributed heavily for the Lions as a rookie in 2017.
After Detroit lost out to the Titans on Malcolm Butler in free agency, Cherepinsky believes the Lions
That projection has Kelly going early in the sixth round (190th overall) to the Baltimore Ravens with Cherepinsky
expecting the team to target running backs to boost their poor running game.
The NFL draft begins with the first round a week from Thursday night with the second and third rounds to follow on Friday and the final four rounds on Saturday.
