Police: Man Died In Custody After Arrest On Daytona Beach Boardwalk

A 47-year-old man died in police custody after he was arrested on the Daytona Beach Boardwalk near Joe's Crab Shack for openly drinking alcoholic beverages Wednesday night, officials said.

Kevin Whalen was arrested with two others about 6:05 p.m. when people started complaining about them drinking, according to an incident report.

While being transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail just before 8:45 p.m., Whalen didn't show any signs of distress.

At some point while en route to the jail, officers found the man not breathing inside the transport vehicle.
