PARIS -- Renault has created a concept showing how a future Formula One car might look.

The R.S. 2027 Vision, which will debut at the upcoming Shanghai auto show, demonstrates the importance of the Chinese auto market to its future, Renault said.

The concept "explores the brand’s vision of how Formula 1 might be in 10 years," Renault said in a >release

on Thursday.

It will be introduced at the show on April 19 by the four-time F1 champion Alain Prost and Cyril Abiteboul, the managing director of Renault Sport racing.

Renault said the concept car would offer a look at F1 that puts the drivers “back at the heart of the sport.” The company is preparing to mark its 40th anniversary of its 1977 entry into the series, as both a constructor and an engine supplier.

Renault returned as a works team last year after taking over the Lotus operation, and finished ninth in the constructors’ standings.

The R.S. 2027 Vision "also probes areas in which new technologies might be carried over from motor racing to road vehicles for the benefits of customers," Renault said.

The concept was designed in a collaboration between the Renault Formula 1 team; Laurens van den Acker, Renault’s design director; and Stéphane Janin, the director of concept cars at Renault.

The R.S. 2027 Vision's debut will be the first time Renault has premiered a concept car in China. In 2012 it introduced the >Talisman sedan at the Beijing auto show

In 2016, Renault started building the compact Kadjar crossover and midsize Koleos SUV in China through the Dongfeng Renault Automobile Company, a 50-50 partnership with Dongfeng Motor Corporation.

Both vehicles share platforms with Renault’s Japanese partner Nissan. China is Nissan’s second-largest market after the United States, with unit sales of 1,354,552 in 2016, for a 5 percent market share.

Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn has said that the brand is targeting a >3.5 percent share of the Chinese market

. Renault reported sales of 35,278 units in China in 2016, a 51 percent increase from 2015, when it sold 23,395. Its market share in February was 0.25 percent, the company said.
