Reports: Cowboys' Ezekiel Elliott Involved In Altercation At Dallas Bar

A text message exchange between Thompson and Elliott last year, made public by Columbus police during their domestic violence investigation, mentioned a then-upcoming drug test for Elliott.

It's unclear whether Elliott is in the NFL's substance abuse program. Even if he's not, he was tested once between April 20 and Aug. 9, per terms of the league's drug policy. If he's already in the program, he's subject to more frequent testing.

Broncos linebacker Von Miller, who will try to stop Elliott on Sunday in Denver, has faced some off-the-field problems himself. He was suspended six games in 2013 for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Miller is an example of an athlete who has put his troubles behind him to excel in the NFL. He led the Broncos to a title two seasons ago and was named Super Bowl MVP.

"You can only control what you can control," Miller said. "You just got to string days together. That's what worked for me when I was going through my tough time. String days together, a day will turn into a week, a week will turn into a month and a month will turn into a year. Over time, time heals all."

Elliott's importance to the Cowboys' offense can't be overstated. Elliott led the league in rushing as a rookie with 1,631 yards and 15 touchdowns. The offense is dictated by a strong run game that takes advantage of one of the league's best lines.

Simply put: Elliott makes Dallas a Super Bowl contender.

Asked last month if the Cowboys found any off-the-field red flags with Elliott during their pre-draft evaluation, coach Jason Garrett said, "No."

Garrett didn't give a direct answer when asked if the Cowboys are concerned by Elliott's behavior.

"The biggest thing we try to do as an organization is provide the right structure for our players, particularly for the younger players as they are getting themselves acclimated to the NFL," Garrett said. "We have a lot of resources in our building. We consider ourselves as coaches as resources. We have player engagement people. We have a lot of different people who can help our players grow and develop and mature. And if something comes up with a particular player, we try to address it head on, try to help them grow and learn from it."

Jones said after Sunday's game that the Cowboys would spare no expense in helping Elliott or any other player overcome off-the-field challenges.

Elliott is usually accompanied by security detail not employed by the Cowboys that sometimes includes an off-duty Dallas police officer, a source said.
