Supercars Bids For Formula 1 Alliance

"We will discuss and explore that with them in support of the F1 race. Gaining championship status for the Supercars could be one of the improvements for next year."

Westacott believes Supercars will continue as the major supporting race attraction at the AGP beyond its existing contract for the life of Melbourne's current F1 agreement through 2023.

Warburton revealed Supercars was prepared to adapt its championship race format to suit the AGP schedule, which is dominated by F1's track time requirements, but he advocated races on the Friday and Saturday, and not racing on the Sunday before the afternoon F1 race.

"It's completely open," he said. "We can make any format work, but we'd probably have some preferences. Friday and Saturday races in our view would be good for the event.

"They can be as long or as short as they want, but if there were championship races on the Friday and the Saturday – and we kept well away from the Sunday – we think there could be some very good formats.
