This 79 Year Old Is Thrilled When She Becomes Oldest Person To Drive F1 Car

Like any race car driver, Rosemary Smith’s love for being behind the wheel is fueled by her passion for speed. She was a successful rally driver —competing on regular roads in mostly traditional cars — but she never imagined she’d be able to drive a Formula One car.

But Renault Sport UK came along and offered the 79-year-old woman a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get behind the wheel of a car with significantly more horsepower than she’s ever tried. She jumped at the chance, and according to the team, she is now the oldest person to drive an F1 car like this.

With the help of Renault F1 driver Jolyon Palmer, Smith learned the basics of piloting a car with 800 horsepower.

“You know, the older you get and you’re sort of feeling well time is sort of running out, so I’ve got to make the most of every moment,” Smith says in the video.
