“God’s plan” is for him to be filthy rich.
A devout New Jersey Catholic claimed his $533 million Mega Millions Friday, saying the Big Man Upstairs picked his winning numbers.
“We believe in God’s plan. He chose the numbers for us,” said Richard Wahl, 47, who moved to Vernon, New Jersey from Michigan last year.
Wahl — whose winning ticket is the most valuable in New Jersey history — opted for a lump-sum payout of $324.6 million, according to lottery officials.
After state and federal taxes, he was expected to take home $220.7 million, officials said.
When Wahl first looked at the winning ticket on March 30, he thought he’d won $1 million.
“I said, ‘Wow. I won $1 million. I can’t believe it.’ I was excited. It was life-changing,” he said.
But then he realized he’d won even bigger bucks — and ran upstairs to tell his wife. “Baby, we get to go on a vacation!” he beamed.
He added, “I checked the numbers 15 times. I wanted to make sure they didn’t change on me.”
The lucky guy now wants to use the cash to help his wife’s family in Mexico and to do some charity work, he said. He also wants to rebuild a 1963 Corvette, he said.
“This is not only life-changing for me. I want it to be life-changing for others — family and friends. We want to do some good with it,” he said.
Wahl bought the winning Mega Millions ticket at Lukoil mini-mart on Route 23 in Riverdale on March 30 — which he pointed out was Good Friday.
“It’s humbling,” he added. “We’re not the type who are going to run out and spend all of that money.”
On Friday, he said he was “getting on a plane” — but wouldn’t elaborate.
His winning numbers were 11, 28, 31, 46 and 59, and the Mega Ball 1.
The odds of winning a mega millions jackpot are 1 in 303 million.
